What is Botox?

Botox is a nonsurgical procedure involving the injection of botulinum toxin into the facial muscles in order to diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Botox injections are commonly used to reduce and in some cases eliminate the appearance of crow’s feet near the eyes, forehead creases, and frown lines around the mouth.

Who can benefit from Botox?

Those in Birmingham with unwanted fine lines and wrinkles due to smiling, frowning, and squinting over time can benefit from Botox injections. Wrinkles are an unavoidable part of aging, but with Botox treatment, those wrinkles can be greatly diminished.

The Benefits of Rejuvenating with Botox

The Procedure:

This procedure will be performed by Dr. Baird, your trusted Birmingham healthcare provider. With the use of a very thin needle, a small amount of botulinum toxin will be injected into select areas of the face. These areas are carefully selected so that only wrinkle producing muscles receive injections, while natural facial expressions are preserved. The number of injections needed is determined by the patient’s facial features and the extent of their wrinkles. The procedure is usually complete in less than 15 minutes and all normal activity can be resumed immediately after. While some results may be noticeable in just a few days, the full results will take up to a week to develop.

Safety and Caution:

After receiving Botox treatment, it is important to remember not to rub or massage the site of injection. Doing so could cause the botulinum toxin to spread to another area of the face, causing unwanted effects such as facial weakness or drooping. While Botox is generally safe, you can expect some mild side effects such as bruising and redness, nausea, headache, and temporary facial weakness. Although uncommon, more serious side effects can include difficulty breathing or swallowing, muscle weakness, and slurred speech.  Contact us today for more information!
